Map makes it possible for you to know at all times where Cye is and how fast and in what direction it is moving. It also allows you to direct Cye's movements by dragging its icon and by clicking on specific screen destinations to which you want Cye to travel.

When you first use Map, the main screen will show an icon of Cye against an indistinct grayish background, which represents the unexplored world in which Cye finds itself. With Map, however, you can create a detailed floor plan of Cye's world -- a floor plan that depicts the entire area where you want Cye to be able to travel and where Cye will execute the specific tasks -- such as vacuuming -- that you tell it to perform.

To create this floor plan, you must map Cye's world. The first phase in doing this consists of establishing where Cye will encounter obstacles and where Cye will find areas in which it can move around freely.

One way you can determine these things is to "drag-and-drive" -- that is, to navigate Cye around its world by dragging Cye's icon on the screen. As you do this, Cye travels around the floor and reports what it finds to your PC. The more you drive Cye in this way, the more information it provides, and the more accurate your floor plan becomes.

But to map Cye's world, you don't have to depend exclusively on the data that Cye generates as you drag-and-drive. You can provide information yourself. By using the Eraser mapping tool on the menu bar, you can mark areas on the floor plan where you know Cye will not encounter anything that will block its movements. Using the Pencil tool, you can indicate on the map the places where Cye will find walls, chairs, desks, or other obstacles.

The second and final phase of the mapping process consists of marking and labeling important places on the floor plan. These places include Home Base, where Cye can dock when not in use and recharge its batteries; Danger Zones where you donŐt want Cye to go; CheckPoints where Cye can check on its location; Vacuum Patches where you want Cye to vacuum; and HotPoints, the destinations you want Cye to travel to.

Each of these five kinds of locations has its own distinctive icon. To mark the floor plan, all you do is select the appropriate icon from the menu bar and click the map on the spot or area you wish to signpost. To label these points, you simply type into a window on the screen the name you wish to give the locations.
